Typically an SMI implementation comes with the changeover to the use of consignment as well. The customer shares his forecast and stock information with the supplier, and thus allows him to take proper action in replenishing the customer’s consignment stock. While benificial to the customer (lower stock value, less risk, less work), the workload and risk shifts to the supplier. Offcourse the supplier also gets some benefits as he’s more flexible to plan his production and transport. Yet the main financial benefits are expected to be with the customer. Suppliers can be quite reluctant to change over to consignment because there’s no direct financial benefit for them. And especially in the cases where a customer cannot leverage its purchasing power to convince a supplier then it might be wise to consider an alternative approach.
